Brenda Barrett serves as the National Coordinator for Heritage Areas for the National Park Service in Washington D.C.  She was formerly the Director of the Bureau for Historic Preservation at the PA Historical and Museum Commission, the state’s public history agency in Harrisburg.  She is an adjunct faculty member at Penn State Harrisburg where she teaches a course in historic preservation practice.
 
Her career in historic preservation began with the National Park Service in the National Register of Historic Places program.  She has held a variety of positions as an archaeological consultant, archaeological field investigator, and as a lawyer for the Senate of Pennsylvania.
 
Brenda received her BA in Anthropology from the University of Colorado and a BA in Archaeology from the University of Wisconsin.  She is a graduate of the Dickinson School of Law and is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Active in the field of historic preservation, she is a board member of Preservation Action and serves as Honorary Counsel for the Society of Industrial Archaeology.  She writes and lectures in the area of historic preservation law, heritage and archaeological policy, and industrial archaeology.  A resident of Harrisburg, Brenda lives with husband, Dan Stern, and their two children.  Her interests include hiking, traveling, and keeping up with the reading in her book club.
